BTSC - 2010

This blog has been set up with a view to discuss the Building Trade Skills Centres UK Ltd (BTSC UK and Europe), and its courses. We want to create an open platform where people involved with us can view and make comments on our courses, trainers, experience and overall standards.

We are hoping this will help us become better at we do, and allow everyone involved with BTSC to actively be a part in our future growth and direction, and allow BTSC to strive towards the highest standards.

We are starting with our changes we have put in place since 2010 which have been geared towards BTSC offering high quality courses, at competitive prices, and bettering our level of service. Here are some possible points for initial discussion:

  • Feedback on changes been made in 2010 so far
  • Quality of courses/trainers/facilities
  • Post course job placements
  • Recommendations for further improvements

  1. Hi my name is Katie and I am the National Administration Manager for BTSC UK and BTSC Europe Ltd. I have worked for BTSC since the doors first opened in Chessington back in Jan 2005 and have seen some significant changes over the years, but in particular over the past 6 months.

    The new management team have listened to all members of staff and taken on board their comments on how to improve BTSC, 99% of the ideas have been implemented and are now in effect, I have named a few below;

Under the old Management all previous training issues had to be addressed to the contracts department in writing, with a 10 day turn around rule in place. It was very rare that a request was actually granted, the terms of the Agreement were quoted and stuck to the letter.

New management team have now scrapped this rule and every trainee has the opportunity to talk to a member of the management team at both Chessington and Manchester in person to help resolve any issues that may arise throughout a trainees learning experience. Every request is looked at on an individual basis and talked through with the trainee, face to face or over the phone, to help resolve any issues quickly and effectively. Most reasonable and valid requests are now granted.

This has helped considerably within Customer Service team too, as the admin team were only allowed to offer the contracts department details to write to, rather than having the human approach and actually helping!

The other major issue was the old BTSC used to have was the ‘hidden’ costs that most of our previous trainees used to complain about, where the exam and registration fees were added on top of the course fees and to some trainee’s this was an issue.

BTSC UK and BTSC Europe have now devised a package whereby all the fees are included within the cost of the course – no ‘hidden’ extras anywhere!

We have also become more flexible towards the training itself, if someone wants to cancel their fast track training but return to fast track later on due to work commitments, this is fine, we understand that you might want to work around current commitments and therefore we are now more flexible. Including flexible payment options too.

We are also introducing our very own UK Plumbing and Electrical Services company, where we will be able to take our trainees out on NVQ visits with our qualified trainers to complete real life work, we will also be looking to recruit our fully qualified trainees to work for our UK Plumbing and Electrical Services company.

As you can see from the points raised above, BTSC UK and BTSC Europe are moving forward in the right direction and listening to our trainees.

If you would like further details, you can contact me on 0208 391 3030 or visit our website www.BTSC.co.uk

  2. BTSC has definitely changed they way they treat students in regards to out of time fees. I called to book my next module and was informed that I was out of time for the module by a few days.
I was expecting the worst but to my surprise the girl on the phone told me to hold on a second and she will run a report to see how much time I am owed if any, previously I had to write in to get someone to look at it let alone actually do it.
I was owed a day or too but not enough to get me onto the date, so there was me thinking here we go how much this is going to cost me!
But to my ultimate surprise she turned round and said well seeing as it's a matter of days I will add you onto the date no charge!
Now anyone who has been at the college as long as I have will know this would never have happened before, the new BTSC if definitely geared towards students now, hopefully it will keep getting better!

  3. Being able to actually speak to someone is a great help, writing a letter takes forever to do and then add the time waiting for a response.
Also its hard to get something across in writing so much easier to chat to someone, and they do actually do their best to sort the problem out now - I’ve managed to come to an agreement which means I don’t end up spending 3 times as much as I already have.
The changes are definitely making BTSC not only a great place to train but a place we want to be trained!

    ReplyDelete
  4. There is no doubt being at the centre you can tell the changes being made are for the better but one fact remains the same, the trainers and the facilities are top notch.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Has anyone had a chance to use the new computers in the reception classroom? I was told that they no longer have the book boxes in there, all the books are now on the computer. Are they easy to use?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Has anyone else had problems with BTSC 9th written exam? I can pass the other exams fine but keep getting stuck on this one.

    ReplyDelete
  7. To Alan - the computers are easy to use, they are same as the ones we use in the classrooms during the week so you should have no problems.

    ReplyDelete
  8. To Barry B, The BTSC 9th exam is designed to get you ready for the City & Guilds 3 hour exam which is the equivalent to an A-Level exam. It is slightly more difficult to your previous exams for this purpose, if you are having difficulty with this exam I would advise to book a self study session with a trainer to look over your previous attempt at the exam.

    Phil Hickey - Trainer

    ReplyDelete
  9. To Alan - All Building Regulations, British Standards and Boiler and Flue Instructions are available on the computers in the reception classroom. If you would like any help or a demonstration of how to use these please do not hesitate to ask anyone at reception.

  10. This is a message for the trainer John Young, I would just like to say thank you for all of your assistance during my course.

  11. Really enjoyed my 3rd Mod, felt I learned a lot which was largely down to Phil Garrett. His approach in the lecture room and in practical’s was spot on making us responsible for prompt time keeping and cleanliness in our work bays, shame it was for only 1 week!

    ReplyDelete
  12. To Terry White you have been an excellent trainer and it has been a great week in all. Made what could have been a difficult week fun and enjoyable.

  14. I found the trainer excellent in all aspects. It has been a very good start to my course. The facilities are great and very friendly, helpful people. An excellent atmosphere to train in.

  15. Has anyone started Level 3 yet? I am due to start in a couple of weeks and have heard conflicting stuff about it. Some people have been saying it is easy but then some people have said that it is so much harder and struggle a lot with the exams.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Each week gets better and better, thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I really enjoy working with Steve this week, great trainer as they all are.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Level 3 isn’t easy! It is easier if you study don’t think because you breezed through some of the Level 2 exams that the same will apply on the next stage. The written exams are harder but as long as you revise the BS and approved documents recommended in the classroom you'll be fine, just know them inside out so you know what pages to go to, otherwise it will eat up your time.

  19. I have just had Andy Botley for the 7th Mod, he was brilliant when it came to verbal one to one advice I could take in a lot of info due to the way Andy physically showed me how to do something while clearly explaining at the same time.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Just like to say that Phil Garrett is exceptionally helpful, patient and always ready to answer questions. Amazing experience this week.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I am very pleased with Keith this week, he really made me work for everything and that has helped me retain a lot of the important information. As always great trainer.

  23. hi,

does anyone know what criteria Module 4 is? and also when the next Moudle 4 course is running?

    thanks

    James G

    ReplyDelete
  24. James, ive just done my Mod 4 this week its pretty different from what we've done before its all lead flashing on a chimney.

apprently the exam is easy its all about weathering nothing else.

    ReplyDelete
  25. hi james

mod 4 is diffrent from the other modules because you are fabricating from flat sheet lead, producing chimney weatherings such as bossed front aprons, step and cover flashings, back gutters and a lead slate. all of this will entail lead welding, lead cutting, bossing, measurements and instalation onto a built brick chimney. as for the exam like all exams they are relitively straight forward as long as you do your self study.hope this helps

    kind regards

  34. On checking figures with our administration department this week, I can still confirm our 100% placement record for our fully qualified trainees. This is great news, especially for our hard working students and for our trainers who do an excellent job at passing on their skills. Time and time again, I receive positive feedback from our associate companies who are satified with our trainees that they take on.

  35. i had Mo this week for my 2nd mod he was very enthusiastic which made the class fun & interesting. Cheers.

  36. To Daniel,

I do apologise that you have experienced problems with your T.C.M, we had a bad batch of tonners for the printers which has now been corrected.

If you would like to bring your T.C.M up to reception we will replace it with a new one.

  40. i am booked onto the 11th Module on the 26th July does anyone know what i need to take to the centre and what the week consist of?

    ReplyDelete
  41. The 11th Mod is very much a classroom orientated mod so you won’t need boots and stuff. Just remember to take 6 passport photos and if you can a copy of your tech cert level 2, if you can’t copy it take it in and ask them to copy it up at reception. Other than that just pens and stuff you get given a pack when start that has everything else to be honest.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I was a bit hesitant about the boiler and gas work as I’d never worked with it before. Gary explained it all so it was easy to understand and was easy to carry out the required installation / service. He was patient and answered all our questions.

  48. To any students experiencing delays with City & Guilds Certificates.

We do apologise for any delays you may be experiencing, we have noticed that rather than the 7-10 working days that we normal wait for certificates to be sent by City & Guilds, we are currently receiving certificates anything up to 3 weeks after the GOLA exams have been taken.

We have recently received a large amount of certificates and our currently sorting them by student and level; as soon as we know we have a full set for a student we will call to advise they are ready to collect.

If you do have any further queries regarding your certificates please do call the centre on 0208 391 3030.

  49. I have just completed my 11th Mod and would just like to say Terry is an excellent trainer thanks mate. Also i think it is worth saying that since the takeover at Christmas I have noticed improvement at the centre. Hopefully it will continue in the future.

  50. i found on this weeks course only having 8 people in the group worked better for space & training, much better than 14 people as on the previous module.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I did my 11th Mod on the 21st June it was a very good class, well engaged. Would like to thank the reception staff for there help and service in the past few months (what a difference new management can make).

    ReplyDelete
  52. I have never done plumbing before I thought I would struggle but I never. I have really enjoyed my first week. Everyone at BTSC has been very helpful. Looking forward to the rest of the course.

    ReplyDelete
  53. module 8 could have been far more complicated, was it not for the training and supervision offered by my instructor. 10/10 Terry. Thanks for your help and advice.

    ReplyDelete
  54. the facilities and equipment were very good and there was no shortage of materials. Terry was brilliant throughout the week showing a lot of genuine enthusiasm and he was very knowledgeable about all areas of plumbing. Terry also had an excellent rapport with the whole clan making the overall experience even enjoyable. God bless.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I can’t fault the training but it is really annoying that the tcm's are never in the same order as the slides in the classroom.

I’m always having to search through losing time and not been able to listen to the trainer and missing vital information.

It can’t be that hard surely?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Does anyone else feel that an hour is too long for lunch?

    ReplyDelete
  57. I've just done my 5th mod trainee and found this week interesting. Steve my trainer pushed me just enough to make me think for myself. At the end of the installation I was very happy with my work. Thanks Steve!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Adam BTSC UK Ltd are now in partnership with Milwaukee Tools, two main reasons for this are as follows;
    1. Most of our trainers have used Milwaukee tools in the past and found that they are best on the market for durability, power and life span.
    2. As you are probably aware we are opening an in-house merchants, where Milwaukee tools will be on sale with promotions for BTSC UK Ltd students.

    Phil Hickey - Trainer

    ReplyDelete
  59. Blair - The TCM does not follow the power point slides because it is designed around your advised 16 hour home study, whilst the power point presentation is designed to enhance your classroom learning experience, they are two separate learning aids. This gives the trainer the opportunity to delve deeper into the subject matter.

  60. i think lunch should stay at an hour and maybe get rid of the afternoon break so we get out earlier to avoid most of the traffic.

    ReplyDelete
  61. i think it just works out right with the breaks and lunch there is so much to learn and do in a day it needs to be broken up

    ReplyDelete
  62. is any one doing the new gas course their running? i dont know how it works there seems to be people on it that have only done up to level 2 or nothing at all. so can you get gas safe without doing level 3 and mod 11?

    ReplyDelete
  63. i didnt realise that you could go straight onto gas, does it include acs?

    ReplyDelete
  64. on starting the workshop I found the trainer stand offish, but as the week went on I saw it was done for a reason, to make us look deeper into problems on our own and over come but he would always help when needed. A good way of training and not holding our hands so much, I learnt a lot

    ReplyDelete
  65. In the last six months 58 of our trainees have been given opportunities within our associate companies to further their experience in the plumbing industry. These positions have been with large building contractors, reactive maintenance companies, small plumbing and heating firms, bathroom and kitchen installation companies and with gas engineers. I can still confirm our 100% placement record for our fully qualified trainees to date.

    ReplyDelete
  66. hi fred
in answer to you question yes there is a new gas course called the EGC ( elementary gas certification ) what this does is allow people with some experiance with gas to do a 4 week course here at the centre and then go on to build your portfolio for gas. now btsc offer something diffrent to all other centres in that after you have payed your course fee you will do a 4 week course here and then included in the fees you will go out with our engineers to collate your evidence. once you have collected enough evidence we will put you in for your acs everything is included in the price. i hope this answers your question

    kind regards

  67. the tools and components in unvented bays are no longer fit for the job. I had issues with most of mine. This is by far the worst equipped bay I have used so far. Made the task more difficult than it should be. Jon Wilmott was a star, managing constant difficulties with grace. Trainers should not have to deal with these issues and trainee upsets. I enjoyed the task but the issues with equipment detracted from the overall learning experience.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Angela, thank you for your comments, we have passed these onto the Facilities team who will check the tools and components to ensure they are repaired or replaced.

Apologise for the difficulties you experienced on your module due to these faults.

  69. again i found the gas to be a full on course, alot to fit in just 4 weeks but Mo’s teaching skills has helped pull us all up to speed. Enjoying the course very much though and feel I’m gaining in confidence as we get further into it. Thanks for all the help Mo, very much appreciated. Just hoping all the evidence for the portfolio will be available but looking forward to going out with a trainer

  70. just finished an out of hours module for leadwork all trainee's did an excellent job...well done lads ...Andy B trainer

    ReplyDelete
  71. I just did my tenth module and would like to say Andy was a great as was Alan but we had 13 students again. It made every thing difficult the trainers handled it really well but i dont think it is fair.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I think that there should be trainers set aside to answer students questions on the phone, it would be really help to have someone on hand to answer questions when your on site and need a little guidance

    ReplyDelete
  73. seeing as you guy's have grassed all out front you could of put benches out there so we could sit out. Or out the back where the smoking bit is could be grassed and benched so we could enjoy a little bit of the sun on our lunch breaks.

    ReplyDelete
  74. the only problem with having a trainer on the phone all day to answer questions is that its then one less trainer on modules, NVQ's and self studies

    ReplyDelete
  75. JUST TO SAY A QUICK THANKS TO BOTTERS FOR HIS HELP ON MY LAST MODULE EASILY THE BEST TRAINER I HAVE HAD TOP MAN

    ReplyDelete
  76. i understand that Ben but when your out on a job it would be nice to call up and get an answer to something your unsure about rather than looking at your tcm lol i have tried to call and ask for a trainer but the girls always say no and only offer selfstudies which is a little unhelpful when your on a job

    ReplyDelete
  77. has anyone attempted the C&G 3 hour exam yet? i'm not looking forward to that one, 3 hours in a exam havent done that in years!

does anyone know if it covers just level 3 stuff? What are the best books to get out ready? also strange question but can you take a drink in and have breaks? its a really long time to be in the test room.

    ReplyDelete
  78. does any one know how you get your unvented hot water and water regs cards?

did my course a couple of weeks ago and they havent turned up.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  80. To Dan,

The UVHW and Water Regulations cards are sent to you directly from NICEIC to the address you put on your forms.

This can take a few weeks as all the information needs to be added onto their systems as well as generating your cards and certificates.

I hope this answers your question.

  81. To Peter,

When a student calls asking to speak with a trainer we will try our best to put them through to a trainer if one is available.

As you can imagine due to the summer holidays we do have a lot of trainers on holiday at present so all available trainers are currently training, on NVQ visits or doing self studies.

  82. To Andy,

I would recommend you book a self study session with a trainer to discuss this exam before you take this exam to give you a few pointers.

Unfortunately you can not take a drink into the test room with you but you can leave one outside and pop out when you need it. You can toilet breaks if required but please bare in mind that your time will not be stopped for these breaks.

  83. Just want to say thanks to all my trainers, I have just signed up for my level 3 fast track on 31st August really looking forward to it.

this course did scare me originally thought there was so much info to take in but every trainer I had took the time to break everything down but at the same time didn’t make it so I got handed everything I had to earn it.

Cheers guys and keep it up for the next series of modules!

    ReplyDelete
  84. The pace was rushed on my 10th mod this week. One week doesn't allow enough time to take in the more complex parts of the module.

I can't thank him enough for the time he spent helping me to get through after I fell behind on my fast track through illness. He gave up his lunch breaks for me and was just there whenever I needed some help. I've spoken to a few other students and they all think very highly of John. 114. Can anyone tell me what is happening to BTSC in Manchester? Has it gone bust? Went along yesterday and the centre was closed! Can't get any information because no-one is answering the phone and the London office won't give out any information until the manager returns on Tuesday! Paid a lot of money to train as a plumber but looks like I might have lost it all!

  115. Hello, in the hope that this blog is still monitored,
Please pay a thought to those of your students with family/children and announce the dates for level 3 this summer.
It will fall over August and we do need to plan holiday travels asap. Waiting until June for the announcement would be leaving it very late.
    Thanks.
